Correct Gym Behaviour
Some of you are probably wondering what I mean by the title Gym Etiquette.
Well, there is a type of “code-of-conduct” within a gym setting and it's important that the guidelines are adhered to so that every gym member can enjoy the use of the facilities.
First of all is basic manners.
Respecting other peoples personal space, the area they are exercising in. Being polite and asking if the other person is finished with what they are using before using it yourself. The simple thing of saying “excuse me”, or “please” and “thank you”. And the big one, NOT being judgemental about how another person is training, just because they are doing the exercise differently to you, or they aren't sure how to do an exercise correctly, or they don't lift as much as you do.
Then there is clothing.
It's important to wear something comfortable to exercise in. Clothing that breathes and moves with you in all the right areas. Work boots and uniforms are not correct (they are simply too restrictive and usually too dirty). And always remember to have a towel with you for both wiping away your sweat, protecting the bench and other equipment from your sweat, and also as a good way to let others know that someone is using that particular machine when you go to get a drink.
And that bring us to water.
Always remember to keep a bottle of water with you when working-out. Hydration is most important. We all sweat, and what we lose when exercising we should always put back in.
Of course, there is also the equipment within the gym environment. 'What about it?' you ask. Well, it's important that you leave it they way you would want it to be left by someone else ready for you to use.. Put your weights away, both dumbbells and plates, in the correct locations. Clean down circuit and cardio equipment after use. Put the weight back on the racks and the bars back in their holders. Put medicine balls and mats back on their racking.
When you leave the gym after your session, put everything back where it came from. Leave the gym the way you would like to find it when you arrive, everything just where you need it.
Be polite to other gym-goers. Have respect for yourself and others.
Be clean and tidy, regarding yourself and the gym.
Within the confines of your local gym, we all have to use the same space. Wouldn't it be a more enjoyable exercise session if it was as comfortable for everyone as being at home? I'm sure we would all want to exercise more if it was.
